E. Jensen presented some considerations on drive beam klystrons and phase stability. The main challenges are the huge power requirements, phase stability, efficiency and cost. An optimization taking into account energy efficiency, cost and lifetime shows that klystrons with a power of about 10MW each should suit the requirements best. To achieve the phase stability the filtering properties of the RF structures and the combiner rings should be utilized. B.J. asked if the drive beam linac can still be considered as not being a feasibility issue. E.J. believes it is challenging but feasible.
R. Wegner presented results of an optimization of the RF structures in terms of efficiency, filling time and cost. The result is that a linac built with 10MW klystrons would be shorter than the one with 15MW klystrons. D.S. asked to perform the same optimizations for low (5MW) and high (30MW) input power. R.W. agreed to do so.
A. Aksoy presented beam dynamics studies for the drive beam accelerator. FODO and triplet lattices have been studied including the influence of wake fields and misalignment. The triple lattice performed better. E.J. pointed out that the parameters for the wake field calculation are incorrect. According to D.S. they were scaled from the CTF3 cavities. It was discussed when better parameters for the wake field simulations could be available.
