Instructions for Speakers

Requested Contributions for Plenary and Closed Sessions

Plenary Sessions

Overview

Information presented in plenary sessions should be considered to be in the public domain.  The majority of the audience will have specialist knowledge in the field or related disciplines, and many will be familiar with presentations from EUCAS 2017 and FCC Week 2017.  To maximise the value of the workshop, please report as much technical detail as you are able to disclose publicly.

Format

20-minute presentation, including time for questions, unless otherwise agreed.

Topics

  • Introduction and background (brief)
    • The company/research team and its background in the field
    • Summary of any recently concluded development activities with CERN
  • Overview of current or proposed conductor-related activities in the FCC study
    • Scope, objectives and approximate schedule
  • For Nb3Sn manufacturers:
    • Conductor layouts under development, with an overview of the motivation and design philosophy
    • The best superconducting performance achieved so far
    • The roadmap towards FCC target performance
  • For other participants:
    • Overview of R&D topics and how they are expected to contribute to future conductor development
    • Work done and results achieved, with an emphasis on the last year
    • Future plans

Closed Sessions

Overview

Information presented in closed sessions is disclosed in strict confidence to a review panel of selected CERN participants.  These sessions are intended to allow for a detailed and balanced review of current FCC conductor activities: analysing challenges, risks, potential and expectations; identifying opportunities for additional support to improve the outcomes of present activities; and prioritising topics for additional study.

Format

Detailed presentation to, and discussion with, the review panel.

Topics

  • Summary of the programme and schedule, including any variations from the originally proposed work plan
  • Detailed description of the conductor layouts under development, including the motivation, design philosophy and expected potential
  • Detailed report of the work performed, including:
    • Fabrication and heat treatment details
    • The superconducting performance achieved
    • Correlations with design, heat treatment and resulting microstructures, if available
    • Significant production difficulties, and any proposed or implemented solutions
  • Analysis of the technical challenges, preferred approaches and feasibility for achieving the following targets (even if they are beyond the scope of the present activities):
    • FCC target Jc(B) performance
    • Long length production
    • deff < 60 µm
    • Cu/non-Cu < 1
  • Quantitative assessment of costs and the potential for cost reduction
  • Needs or opportunities for additional support, e.g. in characterisation
  • Proposals and suggestions for future work

Additional Meetings

Some industrial participants with whom FCC projects have not yet been finalised have been invited to participate in private meetings, as shown in the timetable.  These do not form part of the review programme.

Submission and Presentation Procedures

Presentations for both plenary and closed sessions must be submitted the day before the session (at the latest) in one of the following formats:

  • Microsoft Powerpoint
  • PDF

You can submit your presentation by one of the following methods:

  • Upload directly to the Indico site:
    • Speakers can upload their own contributions, which you can access from the contribution list.
    • To upload, you must log in with an Indico account corresponding to the e-mail address with which you have registered for the meeting. If you do not have an account, please register for a CERN lightweight account.
    • Important: This should only be done for plenary presentations that you are willing to make publicly accessible.
  • E-mail to Simon Hopkins.
  • Upload to CERNBox:
    • A link and password will be supplied to all registered participants by e-mail.
    • Important: Presentations uploaded to CERNBox will be available, for a limited time, to any user in possession of the link and password.

If you prefer to send your presentation by another method, please contact Simon Hopkins.

A computer will be available in each meeting room with which to deliver the presentation.

Contributions to plenary sessions will be treated in confidence and made available only to the review panel.  Contributions to plenary sessions should in principle be considered to be public, but it may be possible to limit availability of the presentations only to attendees and relevant CERN personnel on request.
