Veli Lošinj, Croatia, 23rd - 28th September 2018

The theoretical, methodological and research competences required in Cultural Heritage Science constantly interacts with archaeological, diagnostic and conservation needs. This leads to the development of innovative laboratory and field approaches. One of the most common outcomes is the increasing number of thematic meetings organized on specific topics and dedicated to different materials, archaeological and paleoanthropological fields, historical periods or artistic techniques. Several conferences focus on topics of increasing interest such as novel non-invasive techniques, innovative technologies for in situ investigation or high-resolution remote sensing, refinement of dating techniques and forgery-identification techniques, development of complete systems to monitor conservation spaces. Cultural heritage scientists, archaeologists and art historians are now routinely sending proposals to large-scale facilities (synchrotrons, free electron lasers, neutron and laser laboratories) for experiments with particular needs. This, in turn, paves the way to new international collaborations, especially when different artistic and cultural expressions do not coincide with political borders.

The conference will bring together scientists with diverse backgrounds with the aim of discussing fresh results obtained in the field of Cultural Heritage Science and will encourage new international collaborations. It will be an ideal continuation of previous meetings on cultural heritage organized by ECSAC in 2006 and 2007, of several congresses and thematic meetings organized by the Italian Archaeometry Association (AIAr) since 1997, and several workshops and schools held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) between 2005 and 2015. The conference will be the XVIII International Conference on Science, Arts and Culture, a series dedicated to the late Paolo Budinich, who played a major role in the establishment of the ICTP and in the subsequent creation of SISSA and other international institutions which make up the so called "Trieste system". For this reason the conference venue is Veli Lošinj, Croatia, the town where Budinich was born.
The conference will take place from 23rd to 28th September, 2018, and is organized by ECSAC (the European Center for Science, Art and Culture), with the scientific support of the Italian Archaeometry Association (AIAr) and the sponsorship of several Italian and Croatian Institutions, and of the International Institutions in Trieste.
