Electrical infrastructures

Convener: Mr Fulvio Boattini, CERN

With the increasing availability of modern power electronics technologies such as switch-mode power converters with higher power ratings, DC networks are currently used for HV transmission systems, so-called HVDC lines and represent an interesting potential application for offshore wind parks, solar photovoltaic generation park and train-metro networks. When combined with Energy Storage Systes (ESS) the two technologies present major potential advantages for FCC magnets powering in terms of reduced size of network components, generalized high-energy efficiency and minimization of the power absorbed by the AC grid. Design and standardization of the critical electrical components for the operation and protection of the DC grids is required and could be provided by industry applications.
