Reaching CERN
CERN is located on the border between France and Switzerland. The workshop will take place on the Meyrin site (Switzerland).
You can find a map of the Geneva public transport system here. Even better, download their phone app (Android or iPhone) with live timetables and route calculation. There is also a mobile version of their site which provides similar functionality. Fares are relatively affordable (3 CHF for a max. 60 min trip, on Swiss territory). There are ticket machines pretty much at every stop, except from some stops in France, where you'll have to buy the ticket once on the bus. Bus lines which cross the border are also more expensive.
Double check that you have a valid ticket before you board any bus/tram, controls are frequent and fines quite heavy!
If you're staying in Geneva
You can take Tram 18 from the City centre, CERN is the last station.
If you're staying in France
The Geneva public transport (TPG) system covers also the surrounding France area, so if you are hosted in France there's a chance you will get to use it:
- Bus 64 does Meyrin -🇨🇭🇫🇷 - Prévessin - Ferney
- Bus 66 does Airport -🇨🇭🇫🇷 - Ferney-Voltaire - Prévessin - Saint-Genis - Thoiry
- Bus 68 does CERN (Meyrin) -🇨🇭🇫🇷 - Saint-Genis - Sergy - Thoiry
If you're staying at the CERN Hotel
CERN provides a shuttle service that does the connection between the different buildings of the hotel (including those located in France) as well as the airport. However, you will only be allowed to board the shuttle if you have a valid CERN visitor badge. So, if you're planning on taking the shuttle from the airport, please print your badge beforehand.
If you're coming from the Airport
If you're coming straight from the Airport, then you can choose to take advantage of the Geneva public transport system (TPG) or CERN's shuttle service. Both will be for free (read below!) so choose whatever comes first.
TPG
A free 60-minute ticket is given to everyone arriving at the airport, look for the ticket machines right before the customs. Make sure you have a ticket before boarding a bus/tram.
The best way to reach CERN is to take Bus 28 (dir. Les Esserts), 57 (dir. ZIMEYSA-Gare) or 23 (dir. Carouge-Tours) to Blandonnet and then switching to Tram 18 (direction CERN);
Entering CERN
You can enter CERN through either the Reception or Entrance B. If you have ticked the correct option on the registration form, you will receive beforehand an e-mail with an access badge for CERN. You can either use the provided code to print it at CERN's entrance (reception building or entrance B, at the phone booth) or print it at home. We will provide you a new one anyway at the workshop reception. Please make sure you have actually received your badge, otherwise let us know. You won't be able to enter the site otherwise.
