Lochan Rijal, Ph.D., Head of Kathmandu University’s Department of Music is an award-winning multi- instrumentalist and ethnomusicologist from Nepal. He explores the intersection of heritages tangible (location and architecture) and intangible (knowledge and knowledge- sharing practices) in music. A recent Artist- in-Residence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rijal is leading efforts to build an online ethnographic atlas of Nepali musical heritage. The mapping and data collected will eventually be hosted at the high-performance computing facility set up with support from CERN. As an Arts at CERN Guest Artist, Rijal will present his research work and perform original compositions on the guitar, sarangi, and the arbaja, a Gandharva lute he discovered in the course of his fieldwork.
The show is FREE and OPEN to public. Non-CERN people must register at: https://indico.cern.ch/event/855765/
