Although the Covid-19 Coronavirus is something new, it belongs to pandemics which have occurred time and again in the history of mankind. As such this pandemic is not a new phenomenon. A common feature in all these outbreaks is the initial exponential growth. The mathematics describing these processes are well understood. The behaviour of the virus and even more the behaviour of people is more difficult to model, which makes predictions difficult without real data. However, the basic formulas in the initial phase is easier to predict. In addition, the initial phase of the spread looks very similar in the different countries. In Europe we are still in the initial phase and the reaction from society will determine the height of the famous peak, which needs to be avoided.
This seminar will give a short overview of how mathematics and physics can be used to understand some of the phenomena related to the initial spread of the Coronavirus Covid-19. Some examples from countries in Europe and their different strategies are discussed.
