Sunday January 26th, 2014

14:00 - 19:00: Visit to Sintra, Palace of Pena, one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal
Palacio de PenaSintraVisit to the historic town of Sintra, degustation of the legendary traveseiros of Sintra. The tour will include a walk of 1 hour and a half uphill and downhill in a natural park External view of the Castelo dos Mouros.

Practical info:
  • Ticket for entry to the palace: 11€; 
  • Transport: train of Lisbon – Sintra line (about 40 min one-way from the centre of Lisbon): cost 2.2€ with additional 0.5€ for card;
  • Meeting: at 12:40 at the Rossio train station (to take the train at 13:08)

Please make sure you have adequate clothing in case of rain and wind.

20:00 – 22:00: A walk in Lisbon
Points of interest: Panteão Nacional, Church of São Vicente da Fora, Castelo de São Jorge, the ruins of the Roman theatre, miradouro of Santa Luzia, the old wall of Lisbon.

Practical info:
  • Meeting point: Praça da Figueira;
  • Dinner at restaurant Solar dos Bicos (located by the historical building of Casa dos Bicos): cost 10 – 15 €. Dinner will start at 22.30.

20:00 – 21:30: Guided tour of Lisbon - “Welcome to Lisbon by night”*
Rossio StationThe tour will include: 
  • Ascension with elevator Glória: a mean of public transport since the beginning of 20th century;
  • Miradouro (vista point) of São Pedro de Alcântara: a view over the city with an introduction to its history;
  • Largo Trindade Coelho – Church and museum of São Roque (only from the outside because the buildings will be closed at that hour): the Jesuits in Portugal, the point of departure of São Francisco Xavier for Asia;
  • Largo do Chiado: the centre of cultural life and the bohemia of the city since the end of the 19th century;
  • Rossio: the heart of the city since the Middle Age; Ginginha: a traditional drink of Lisbon;
  • Descension down Rua Augusta: Lisbon after the earthquake;
  • Praça do Comércio: a visit hall of Lisbon – from the antique Terreiro do Paço up to nowadays; O Terreiro do Paço of King D. Manuel (the Discoveries) of the Filipes and of the Pombaline Lisbon.
Practical info:
  • Starting meeting point: Praça de Restauradores.
  • Price of the tour: depending on the numeber of participants (approx. 10-12€); the price includes: a guided tour in English, a ticket for the Glória elevator, 1 glass of ginginha per person.

21:30 – 22:30: Dinner at restaurant Adega do Manuel
Sé CathedralAfter the visit we'll go to the restaurant, making a turnabout to see the exterior of the Sé (main church):
  • Descension down Rua da Prata, ascension with the Elevator of Rua dos Fanqueiros up to Rua da Madalena
  • Rua de São Mamede - Sé Cathedral and Largo de Santo António: the Sé Cathedral of Lisboa, the only roman building in Lisbon; Santo António of Lisbon or of Pádua, traditions of the Sé, locality where Santo António was born;
  • Arrival at the restaurant Adega do Manuel.
    Menu:
    • couvert - entries: pão e Queijo de Nisa (queijo do Alto Alentejo) - bread and Cheese of Nisa (from Alto Alentejo, an interior region of Portugal);
    • sopa - soup: caldo verde com e sem chouriço - green broth with or without chouriço (a smoked Portuguese sausage):
    • peixe - fish: bacalhau com broa (a receita tem espinafres) - codfish with corn bread (the recipe contains spinache);
    • carne - meat: lombo de porco com castanhas, arroz e batatas fritas, salada mista - pork chucks with chestnuts, rice and fried potatoes, mixed salad;
    • vegetarian: massade de legumes - pasta with vegetables:
    • sobremesa - dessert: pudim de ovos, tarte de amêndoa ou peça de fruta - egg pudding, almond tart or a piece of fruit;
    • bebidas - drinks: água, sangria, vinho, cerveja, refrigerantes, etc. - water, sangria, wine, beer, cooled drinks, etc; café

  • Price of dinner: 14€ per person (with VAT); included: entries, soup, main dish, dessert, drinks and café

20:00 – 21: 30: Walk in Belém (Betlehem)
Belem TowerPoints of interest: Jerónimos Monastery, Tower of Belém, Monument of Discoveries, Rose of Winds, Palace of Ajúda, Belém Palace (Presidential residence), Museum of coaches, Electricity Museum. Degustation of the legendary Pasteis de Belém.
  • Meeting point: Garden in front of the Museum of Coaches. How to arrive:
    • option 1: tram 15. It can be conveniently taken at Cais do Sodré, Praça do Comercio or Praça da Figueira. Cost 1.8€ with additional 0.5 € for card;
    • option 2: train (Cascais line) at station Belém. The train can be taken at Cais do Sodré. Cost 1.2€ with additional 0.5€ for card.
21:45 – 23:00: Dinner at restaurant “Andorinhas”

Menu Entries:
  • Entradas: Tuna fish salad, bean salad, shrimps, rissoles, croquettes, samosa, farinheira (Poruguese smoked sausage), mackerel. Patê atun, salada de favas, camarão, rissois, croquetes, chamuças, farinheira, carapauzinhos.
  • Fish – Peixe: filé of dories, fish massada with shrimps, mukeka of shrimps, bacalhau (codfish) a Brás, Feijoada of cuttlefish with shrimps, Filetes de peixe galo, Massada de peixe com camarão, Mukeka de camarão, Bacalhau a Brás, Feijoada de choco com camarão;
  • Meat – Carne: Pork a portuguesa, fried steak of turkey a Andorinhas, rice of duck, grilled pig chuck, alheira of game animal. Carne de porco a portuguesa, bifinhos de perú fritos a Andorinhas, arroz de pato, lombinhos do porco no churrasco, Alheira de caça;

  • 19h30: Welcome Drink: Vinho do Porto tinto e branco, refrigerantes e água frutos secos, mini tostas com pastas diversas, (requeijão c/ coentros, azeitona, manteiga corada, salmão com cebolinho);
  • 20h00: Dinner:
    • Soup: Consommé de abóbora c/ hortelã (Consomme of Pumpkin with mint)
    • Fish: Bacalhau gratinado com espinafres e gambas (Codfish au gratin with spinach and prawns)
    • Meat: Perna de Borrego com couve salteada e migas de broa (Leg of Lamb with sautéed cabbage and creamed bread)
    • Desert: Cericá (typical desert)
    • Wine red and white (Monte da Vaqueira (Regional Alentejano), beer, water, juices and coffee included.
