Description

Workshop on communicating the physics of the smallest particles

Organizer:

Netzwerk Teilchenwelt

Content of the workshop:

  • Basics of science communication
  • Preparation and communication of research content and methods to young people
  • Theoretical learning units as well as practical exercises
  • Interactive and participatory methods
  • Tips and suitable materials for clearly conveying the physics of the smallest particles
  • Practical parts and reflection phases
  • Exchange of experiences on masterclasses and student experiments for young people in particle physics, astroparticle physics and hadron and nuclear physics as well as local organization in Netzwerk Teilchenwelt.

The workshop offers both impulses from external speakers and the time for best practice exchange among participants.

The workshop will be led by the science journalist and lecturer in the field of science communication Evelyn Bargs-Stahl.

Beside practical excercises, the workshop also includes a personal video training. Afterwards you will be given feedback on the content and structure of the sequence with regard to a learning-conducive and motivating design. In addition, one's own role as a lecturer is discussed and reflected upon.

Participants:

The workshop targets at Netzwerk Teilchenwelt facilitators, i.e. people that perform Masterclasses, workshops or labexperiments for (high-)school students and the general public in particle-, astroparticle- or hadronphysics. Please note, that the number of participants is limitted to 20. Also, it is our concern that as many locations of the network as possible are represented. Therefore, we ask you for a short letter of motivation (in the registration formular).

Language:

This workshop is held in english and specifically targets at facilitators that plan to do also the masterclasses in english language, e.g. because they are non-german speakers or have little german language skills.

The same workshop is also offered in german language on Feb 20-22 in Fulda, see https://indico.cern.ch/event/1225687/ for more information.

Costs:

The costs for the workshop are covered by Netzwerk Teilchenwelt, i.e. participation is free of charge for you. This also includes the accomodation in the Physikzentrum in Bad Honnef.

Registration:

You are enthusiastic about science communication and want to extend your skills?

The workshop is already booked out. But please register here if you want to be put on the waiting list.
