I will provide some examples of customer use cases, and how to run these models with confidence: secure private environments and inference infrastructure, well-trained people, and a responsible AI execution framework (not just principles). I will also discuss some current work directions, at both hardware and software levels.

        Generative AI has accelerated calls for the establishment of an international regulatory framework for AI so as to exploit its full potential while protecting against what many see as existential risks. This framework consists of several differentiated dimensions necessitating the creation of new international organisations. While this may be an ideal solution, the nature of current AI development and the state of geopolitics makes this a very unlikely to happen anytime soon. Wyckoff proposes an interim Plan B.

        The release of ChatGPT has changed the way AI technologies are perceived as possible for the next years. In this keynote, we will dive deep into the inner workings of ChatGPT and more particularly of (large) language models. We will explore the backbone architecture of current models called Transformer and its interesting properties. We will discuss why such language models can be considered as more than word prediction models, and explore their reasoning capabilities and their generalization property. We will conclude our presentation with a discussion about limitations of large language models.

        The message-passing paradigm has been the “battle horse” of deep learning on graphs for several years, making graph neural networks a big success in a wide range of applications, from particle physics to protein design. From a theoretical viewpoint, it established the link to the Weisfeiler-Lehman hierarchy, allowing to analyse the expressive power of GNNs. We argue that the very “node-and-edge”-centric mindset of current graph deep learning schemes may hinder future progress in the field. As an alternative, we propose physics-inspired “continuous” learning models that open up a new trove of tools from the fields of differential geometry, algebraic topology, and differential equations so far largely unexplored in graph ML.

        What are data quality and quality management? What are the most important moments in the life of data and what do they have to do with trustworthy AI? When can you have trust and why? Why is trust not always a “given”?

        A general misunderstanding of modern machine learning methods is the belief that more sophisticated, flexible methods have fewer requirements on data quality. This has led to the incautious use of machine learning with “alternative data sources” and “big data” with the confidence that these methods can “deal with” any issues in the data. However, in reality it is the other way around; these potentially powerful tools often have even stronger requirements on data. This is even more true for causal analyses. We tackle this topic by first discussing trustworthy AI in the context of the Swiss federal strategy whose vision is: “human-centric and trustworthy data science and AI for public good and policy”. We will then give some specific insights regarding how we can make AI more trustworthy using certain causal inference methods. The presentations and the following round table discussion will consider these questions, related issues, and more.

        Determining an effective public, private or international policy that addresses a desired problem is a complex and difficult task. According to UNICEF: “Evidence-based policy making refers to a policy process that helps planners make better-informed decisions by putting the best available evidence at the center of the policy process". Such a policy development process considers "evidence" as the central element to make the best-informed decisions possible concerning the choice, design and implementation of policies. The evidence consists of information collected or established beforehand by systematic or scientific studies, such as statistics, demographics or expert opinions, calculations of indicators, forecasts or models obtained by simulations. Numerical techniques play a crucial role in revealing evidence, among others we can mention data analysis by data mining or machine learning, agent-based simulations to study various scenarios, or advanced and interactive visualisations.

        This session addresses the topic of Evidence-based policy-making from different angles: public or private companies policies, data requirement, the digital services and methods supporting policy processes; and regroups panelists representative of these various aspects.

        Deep learning is used for most machine learning applications at the moment, as the results are often very good and it limits manual feature engineering. As an intrinsically black box model it causes problems in domains such as medicine where mistakes can have serious effects and in general when humans need to integrate and understand outcomes of deep-learning based decision support with other data. In these situations it becomes important to explain how a decision was reached by a model to create trust with the users and avoid serious mistakes, for example linked to changes in the used data or bias in the models. interpretability of AI tools as well as quantification and visualization of uncertainty in decisions and boundaries of decisions can help using such tools and to make informed decisions and avoid automation bias.

        As the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) program steps into the exascale epoch, a luminosity upgrade is scheduled for 2029 (HL-LHC), which will yield an estimated exabyte of data annually from each detector. This significant escalation in data volume and complexity heralds an unparalleled computational challenge. In anticipation of this imminent landscape, the LHC experiments have initiated an ambitious research and development (R&D) campaign.
        Concurrently, the sphere of computing is experiencing multiple transformative technological shifts, including the advent of exascale technologies, the proliferation of accelerated heterogeneous hardware, the burgeoning AI/Machine Learning revolution intertwined with the convergence of AI and High Performance Computing (HPC), and the environmentally crucial green revolution, which emphasizes the reduction of carbon footprint and enhancement of efficiency.
        For the past two decades, CERN openlab has been instrumental in harnessing such technology revolutions, forming symbiotic relationships with industry partners, thereby reinforcing its unique capacity to instigate innovative R&D. This presentation will delve into the preparatory computational work for the HL-LHC and the research domains being explored through collaborations with industry counterparts.

        With the advent of generative AI and large language models, today’s AI systems rely on increasingly large amounts of training data, including personal data. This has raised policy concerns around how human rights, including the right to privacy, can be protected in an AI-driven world. The OECD has been leading on multiple fronts to support the development and implementation of global standards related to emerging technology, privacy, and the responsibility of business to respect human rights. As the first intergovernmental standard on AI, the 2019 OECD AI Principles promote use of AI that is innovative and trustworthy and that respects human rights and democratic values. The 1980 OECD Privacy Guidelines are recognised as the global minimum standard for privacy and data protection. The OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises set out government backed expectations on how business can behave responsibly with respect to human rights and other impacts on society. This panel convenes leading experts on AI, privacy, data protection, and human rights to explore the opportunities and risks around protecting privacy while allowing innovation to flourish in an AI age. The panel will discuss international standards, differing policy approaches, and efforts to promote policy coherence and legal interoperability in an increasingly AI-driven world. Leonardo Cervera Navas, the Secretary-General for the European Data Protection Supervisory Authority (EDPS), will present a 10-minute introductory keynote, followed by a panel discussion between the other speakers.

        Brice Catherin is an artist and doctor in music composition (university of Hull). He has 17 years of experience as an independent musician, intermedia artist, AI artist, and performance artist, and 6 years of experience as an art researcher.

        His transversal and international approach to art practices has led him to collaborate with artists from all over the world. He also develops art projects across disciplines with non-artists from the Global Majority as well as under-represented and/or marginalised populations in Europe and Southern Africa.


        Maria Eriksson is a Postdoc and Research Associate at the department of Art, Media, and Philosophy at Basel University, Switzerland. Her research is located at the intersection of media studies, software studies, and science and technology studies and focuses on the interplay between culture and technology. Her work has previously explored the role of AI within the music industries and she is currently involved in several projects that study how artificial intelligence sees – and doesn’t see – the past.
