Description
Heavy quarks are invaluable in probing the bulk properties of the medium. Unfortunately, the interactions between heavy quarks and the light degrees of freedom of the medium are not amenable to a description in terms of perturbative calculations. To remedy this situation, we develop a framework (arXiv: 2510.13942) based on effective field theory to understand the interaction of the heavy quark with the weakly coupled, collective degrees of freedom of the medium. In this theory the medium is treated as a colorless fluid and described by a derivatively coupled scalar theory. The interaction between the heavy quark and the fluid field then can be written down systematically using symmetries and power counting of the theory. We calculate the thermal scattering cross section between the heavy quark and the phonons, acting as collective excitations of the fluid fields. Additionally, we examine the decay width of a heavy quark-phonon resonance.
