Description
Jets provide well-controlled, multi-scale probes of QCD processes. By resolving jet splittings, differential jet substructure accesses the dynamics governing how colored partons radiate and fragment. The excellent tracking performance and low momentum reach of the ALICE detector enable precise jet splittings measurements, particularly in regimes dominated by non-perturbative effects. This talk presents complementary representations of jet substructure that emphasize both the kinematic and temporal structure of parton splittings.
The primary jet Lund Plane provides a 2D representation of jet splittings in relative transverse momentum and opening angle, enabling a systematic exploration of QCD radiation within jets. Using high statistics Run 3 data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.36 TeV, we perform a 3D Lund Plane study in pp collisions, adding the $p_\mathrm{T}^{\mathrm{jet}}$ in addition to the variables discussed above, to probe the evolution of non-perturbative QCD effects. In addition to conventional angular-ordered C/A re-clustering, we investigate an alternative time-based ($\tau$) re-clustering scheme.
The differences exhibited by groomed jet substructure observables when calculated using angular- and time-ordered re-clustering in pp collisions, highlight sensitivity to the underlying ordering variable and are important for extending MC generators to higher orders.
These results establish a baseline in pp collisions and motivate future applications in Pb-Pb collisions at 5.36 TeV, where the Lund Plane can be used to map jet-medium interactions. Since angular ordering may not be respected by medium-induced emissions, $\tau$ re-clustering offers a promising tool to both study medium-induced modifications of jet structure and to separate the magnitude of quenching effects in early and late splittings.
