Description

The measurement of prompt dilepton production at hadron colliders represents a key signature of the partonic structure of hadrons, quark-gluon plasma and of the preequilibrium. There exists no measurement at masses below 10~$\rm{GeV}/c$ and low transverse momentum at TeV collision energies due to the dominating background from semileptonic decays of charm and beauty hadrons. We present the prospects for low-mass Drell-Yan measurements with LHCb in Run 3 in the mass range between 2.9-60~$\rm{GeV}/c^2$ with lepton transverse momentum above 1$\rm{GeV}/c$ and for intermediate mass dilepton measurements in heavy-ion collisions in collider mode. We discuss earlier LHCb measurements in the high mass region and discuss Run 3 detector performance, highlighting the software trigger, vertex reconstruction and particle identification capabilities. In particular, we present SemiCharmTag, a tagging algorithm to retrieve unbiased properties of leptons from semileptonic decays of charm hadrons and to improve the signal-to-background ratio. The performance is shown based on full simulations of pp collisions in the dilepton mass range 2.9-5~$\rm{GeV}/c^2$.
