Description
The LHCb experiment has pioneered a unique fixed-target program at the LHC, which has been upgraded for Run 3 with the new SMOG2 system. This device provides improved confinement of the gaseous target, resulting in a substantial increase in fixed-target luminosity. In addition, SMOG2 introduces for the first time the possibility to inject non-noble gases, thereby expanding the range of accessible collision systems. These upgrades enable high-statistics studies of open charm production in proton–nucleus collisions. Charm production measurements in this environment provide unique insights into cold nuclear matter effects-such as nuclear PDF modifications, parton energy loss, and intrinsic-charm contributions—across small and large collision systems at the same center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair. In this talk, we will present recent measurements of open-charm production in proton–nucleus fixed-target collisions with the LHCb experiment.
