Characterizing inclusive charged-particle jet production and fragmentation in pp collisions with ALICE

Description

Jets, collimated showers of particles originating from high-energy parton scatterings, are powerful probes of perturbative QCD. After an initial hard scatter, their evolution involves a perturbative shower followed by hadronization. As such, their internal structure provides sensitivity to the dynamics of QCD across a wide range of scales.

Using the upgraded Inner Tracking System (ITS2) and the continuous readout of the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) in Run 3, we present ALICE measurements of inclusive charged-particle jet production as a function of the jet resolution parameter R in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV. The increased statistical reach enables improved precision, providing tighter constraints on perturbative QCD calculations for jet production.

Jet fragmentation is further characterized through measurements of the transverse momentum fraction $j_\rm T$ as a function of the longitudinal momentum fraction $z$ of jet constituents. These observables provide complementary information on the distribution of momentum within jets, resulting in a multi-dimensional and constraining picture of jet production and fragmentation.
