Accomodation and travel information (incl. costs)

General Information:

All the participants will stay at the Centre Paul Langevin in Aussois, where the scientific sessions will take place.

We expect all the participants to stay for the entire duration of the workshop (Monday 9am - Saturday noon), in particular not to arrive on Monday morning (which means missing essentially all the talks of the day) and not to leave on Friday afternoon (which means missing the Saturday session and all the round tables on Friday).

Priority will in any case be given to participants attending all the sessions given the restricted number of rooms we have this year. [It might be possible to stay somewhere else but it is not very convenient and we will not be able to provide any help to search]

Aussois is a ski resort and the workshop takes place in winter. You should then expect winter conditions and the corresponding traffic issues. It therefore makes sense to try to avoid the late trains and to consider arriving in the late morning or early afternoon, to arrive with daylight. The sunset is at 5pm!

Cost:

The cost for the conference attendance with full board accommodation for 6 nights and the conference fee is 750€ (single occupancy) and 680€ (double shared) (incl. all the meals, the coffee breaks, the rental of the conference room, etc.) . If you stay one night more, add about 110€ (The centre will take care fo this). The default way is to directly pay at the centre (cash or card). Other options should be analysed case by case (and you should inform us as early as possible).

Note the price for accompanying persons is also 110€ per day as full board accommodation is mandatory.

In case of need, we have a very limited budget to waive the conference fee or to cover some of the other local cost. Email J.P. Lansberg regarding this. However, we are not able to cover travel costs.

Special requests (meals and housing):

You are asked to specify any dietary requirements when you registered. You can modify such information by updating your registration until December 31st.

The same applies for the accommodation of companions (double rooms) and kids. If you have doubts, email J.P. Lansberg. The additional cost per night for full board accommodation is approximatively 90€ (it should be paid at the centre).

Ski et al.:

Once the scientific program is settled, we will take care of the social activities and, in particular, ski. If there is a sufficient number of ski/snowboard beginners, we can book group lessons (to be paid by you, of course).

Travel information and tips:

The center is 9km away from the Modane train station. However, after the landslide that happened at the end of August 2023, the circulation of trains between Paris, Turin and Milan is suspended (the restart of the circulation is not envisioned before early 2025).

On the French side, high speed trains leaving from Paris  will stop in Saint-Michel-Valloire as well as local trains (TER) from Chambéry. Substitution buses reaching mountain resorts (thus directly to Aussois) are provided (see https://www.sncf-connect.com/statics/pdf/TRSP-DOM/Modane/Affiche%20Maurienne%20mise%20%C3%A0%20jour%202.pdf ). There are also SNCF buses (TER) from Chambéry to Modane (not Aussois). At this stage, we suggest the solutions listed in the table below.

Therefore, for people arriving from France, we advise to take a train to Saint-Michel-Valloire and we will book (but not pay) shared taxis based on your arrival and departure information. The ride should be smooth and approx. 30 min depending on the weather condition. For information, a shared taxi should be 120€ on Sunday which we consider to be quite affordable given the distance (27km). Another option is to take a bus to Modane and a taxi from there, which would reduce the cost but increase the trip duration.

As such, make sure that your arrival and departure information on the indico are up to date. You can modify them at any time.

Here are some suggestions if you are leaving from Paris (note that luggage delivery can take some time at both Paris airports, and anticipate to take three hours from flight arrival to train, even though on paper the trip from CDG from Gare to Lyon says ~45 mins, it typically takes 1hr30):

Train schedule from Paris

If leaving before noon

Best option: TGV INOUI 6407

or wait ~1h and take the bus (16h45->17h44) with a connection in Modane

In summary, if you arrive in Saint-Michel Valloire, you can either (depending on availability):

  1. take a shared taxi to Aussois (100 EUR per taxi)
  2. take a bus to Modane and then a taxi to Aussois or
  3. a bus to Aussois (with a connection in Modane).

Trains from Italian side

On the Italian side, high speed trains ("Frecciarossa", from Trenitalia) reaching Modane train station from Milan and Turin are for the moment cancelled. Trenitalia gives daily updates on the status of the network through their portal (http://www.viaggiatreno.it/infomobilita/index.jsp#). As of now, there is no prediction for the reprise of the circulation.

The alternative solution on the Italian side is to take a train from Turin (Porta Nuova station) to Bardonecchia. Trains leave from Turin Porta Nuova approximately every 2 hours on Sundays, while more trains are available during week days.

To reach Aussois from Bardonecchia on Sunday, one (or more) shared 8-seater taxi from Bardonecchia to Modane will be organised later afternoon (the cost is 140€, to be shared by the participant).

For weekdays, another option is a bus from Bardonecchia to Modane (line 902, travelling monday to saturday, 7 trips per day, 3.60€ - ticket to be purchased on the bus. Here is the timetable: https://www.bardonecchia.it/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Orari-linea-902-valido-dal-20.11.2023.pdf).
