Travel
Houston is served by two airports, George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) to the north and Houston Hobby (HOU) to the south. Hobby Airport is the closest airport to Rice University (about a 30-minute drive in favorable traffic conditions), served mostly by Southwest but also with Delta and American airline connections. George Bush Intercontinental Airport, which is much larger, is generally just under an hour's drive away, but the drive can take longer in peak traffic times and because of delays due to airport construction and congestion.
In particular, note that on Friday, as this is Memorial Day weekend, traffic could be exceptionally heavy.
Also note that you will need to take a shuttle bus to get to the rental car facilities at the airports.
If you are staying in a hotel near the Rice campus in the medical center area, you generally do not need to rent a car. The hotels are within easy walking distance to the university where the meeting will take place. From the airports there are Uber, Lyft, taxi, and hotel shuttle bus options. There is also the Metrorail Red Line that can take you from near Rice and the hotels to downtown Houston.
Further travel information and maps to Rice can be found here.
Rice Shuttles
There are also several Rice shuttle routes that anyone can take around the inner campus loop, and a loop from the Biosciences Reseach Center (BRC) that is very close to the hotels. These might be useful in case of inclement weather or other need. The BRC shuttles should start around 7:45am (College way stops 6 and 7 would get you closest to the venue).
Parking
If you attend the meeting with a car, there is limited visitor parking on campus for $12/day. Further information on lots and rates can be found here, with a campus map showing locations here. The North Annex, Founder’s Court, and Entrance 3 visitor lots would be closest to the meeting venue. There is also parking underground at the Biosciences Research Center (BRC). These sites are indicated on the map below. Note also that your hotel also may charge for parking.
