Description

The Fast Forward Detector (FFD) is a subsystem of the MPD,
one of the two heavy ion collision experiments of the NICA collider at JINR. The FFD provides fast interaction trigger with determination of interaction point position and serves as a start detector for the time-of-flight system of the experiment. The detector consists of two arrays of Cherenkov counters placed on both sides of the interaction point. Fast determination of the interaction point position is based on time
difference between the pulses in two arms. The detector design, electronics and other FFD subsystems are described in this report. Also, FFD characteristics obtained in test measurements with beam, cosmic rays, and laser are presented.
