Description
Following the United Nations' establishment of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) on February 11, IPPOG launched a special edition of the International MasterClasses dedicated to high-school girls. The SPRACE Outreach Group promptly embraced this initiative, organizing its first IDWGS celebration in February 2017. Ever since we have developed a dynamic program that goes beyond the traditional MasterClass activities, designed to address barriers facing young women in STEM.
Our program combines the standard hands-on particle physics analysis with CMS data, with interventions to inspire and empower the participant girls: round-table discussions with women scientists sharing their career paths and challenges, interactive physics demonstrations, and a special session conducted by psychologists for helping the students identify and overcome barriers to STEM careers.
This talk will present our approach, share insights from ten years of implementation, and discuss how these complementary activities create a supportive environment that encourages young women to envision themselves as future physicists, aiming to build a diverse talent pipeline for high-energy physics.
