Recent developments in high-powered laser beams have opened the realm of the petawatt regime. Accelerating electrons and protons to relativistic energies and producing electron-positron plasmas are now possible. Protons created in the GeV range could enhance the production of pions and muons and be applied to a source of particles for a neutrino factory. Electron beam plasma accelerator experiments carried
out at Stanford will also be discussed in the case of a wake field driven by an intense laser pulse instead of an electron bunch.
