Description
Many laboratories around the world are studying high intensity linacs for neutron spallation sources, radioactive beam facilities, nuclear waste transmutation or neutrino factories. One of the crucial items is the activation of the machine by particles hitting the beam pipe or the cavity walls. Understanding the emittance growth caused by space charge and focusing mismatch is needed to ensure a loss rate below 1 W/m as required for hands-on-maintenance. An overview of resonant space charge effects is given together with measures to minimize the degradation of the beam. Examples will be drawn from the CERN SPL and the SNS linac studies.
