Description
Crystalline beams can be considered as the ultimate state of a particle beam submitted to intense cooling and the first evidence for this type of beam has just been observed as a phase transition between gas and periodically ordered solid states. The experiment is achieved in the table-top RF quadrupole storage ring PALLAS. The particles are Mg+ ions of about 1 eV cooled by laser. The production of coasting and bunched crystalline beams will be discussed.
