Arriving in Glasgow
The University of Glasgow is located in the west end of the city and is accessible from the city centre by subway or bus.
Hillhead station is the closest to the university (5 minute walk) and a single ticket costs £1.65. Returns and day cards are also available. Smartcards offering discounted tickets may be ordered online for free but note these take up to ten working days to arrive. Buchanan Street and St. Enoch are the stations in the city centre.
By Air
Glasgow Airport
From Glasgow airport there are two bus services, both of which have bus stops on the terminal forecourt. The 500 bus service operates up to every 15 minutes from Glasgow Airport to the city centre, see timetable and takes 15-20 minutes. The bus stops by Queen Street train station (stop GD on the route map) from where the Buchanan Street subway station is easily accessible. Tickets cost £8 for a single, £12.00 for a 28-day return and can be bought on the bus, or alternatively on the First m-ticket app ahead of time.
The 77 is less frequent and takes approximately one hour, however the bus stops by Partick subway station which may be more convenient for you if your accommodation is nearby. A single fare costs £4.95.
Edinburgh Airport
The Citylink Air bus to Glasgow Buchanan Street bus station is found at stop C on the terminal forecourt. The bus runs every 30 minutes and costs £11.60 for a single, £19.00 for a return. Tickets can be bought online via www.citylink.co.uk, www.megabus.com (for cheaper tickets), from the driver or at the Visit Scotland desk by UK Arrivals at the airport.
Prestwick Airport
There are direct trains from Prestwick Airport to Glasgow Central station every 30 minutes, taking around 45 minutes and costing around £8.00. St. Enoch is the closest subway station.
By Train
If you arrive by train you will arrive in either Queen Street or Central Station. From Queen Street station the easiest option is to take the subway from the adjoining Buchanan Street station. From Central Station, St. Enoch subway station is the closest (5-10 minutes walk). Alternatively you can exit onto Hope Street and take the 4, 4A bus to University Avenue or 2, 3, 9 along Argyle Street.
By Car
Glasgow is well served by motorways (M74 to England, M8 to Edinburgh). From Carlisle, Newcastle and the south, exit M74 onto the M73 and join the M8. M8 exits for the university are J18 if travelling from the north, south or Edinburgh, and J19 if coming from Glasgow Airport and the west. Note that car parking on campus and in the surrounding areas is notoriously difficult.
