The 15th Hellenic Academic Libraries Conference opened today with the reading of a letter from CERN to the <place w:st="on"><placetype w:st="on">University</placetype> of <placename w:st="on">Patras</placename></place> thanking the University for its support of the CERN-led activities to make the high-energy physics literature open access. This provided the perfect introduction to open access and the practical activities and policy implementations being undertaken world-wide.
CERN is at the forefront of both thinking about open access and its implementation. CERN hosts meetings that help to define the open access community and the work with the CERN repository is second-to-none, providing an inspiration world-wide and an example of how to successfully put in place an open access policy that has the desired effect - i.e., making research from CERN freely available to all interested readers. It is therefore no surprise that CERN is now leading efforts to transition the high-energy physics literature from closed, subscription access to open access.
The efforts being coordinated by CERN have the potential, for the first time, to bring the literature in an entire subject area into open access. This is an immensely exciting prospect and one that SPARC Europe fully supports. We wish CERN and your partners every success with this hugely important effort and thank you for your leadership in this endeavour.
