Travel & Directions

Berkeley Lab is located in the San Francisco Bay Area in the hills above the UC Berkeley Campus. To access the Lab, we strongly encourage the use of public transportation in combination with LBNL's shuttle bus.

The Bay Area is served by several international airports. San Francisco International Airport (SFO, the main airport) and Oakland Airport (OAK, a bit closer than SFO but mostly domestic flights) are the closest ones.

Arriving at SFO:

At the SFO BART station, take the Pittsburgh/Bay Point train to the 19th St. Oakland station. Get off that train and take the Richmond train to the Downtown Berkeley BART station.

Arriving at OAK:

The Oakland Airport BART station is located just across from the Terminal 1 baggage claim area and a short walk from Terminal 2. At the Coliseum, change to the Richmond train and exit at the Downtown Berkeley BART station.

From downtown Berkeley to LBNL:

Monday through Friday, between 6:25am and 9:19pm, the Laboratory Shuttle Bus (Blue Route) is the most convenient way to come to the Lab. To use the Lab Shuttle, you need a photo ID plus either a printed confirmation of your LBNL Guest House reservation or a visitor pass (can be requested when you register).

When the Lab Shuttle is not available, you can take a taxi (parked around the BART station area).

Using an airport shuttle:

Multiple commercial shuttle companies offer rides from Bay Area airports. One example is Bayporter Express, which serves both SFO and OAK.

By car:

Directions for driving to Berkeley Lab can be found here. If you stay at the Guest House, you are allowed to park in Lot Z, located across the street from the Guest House. Otherwise you need to request a parking pass during registration (or notify us in advance).
