Esplanade des Particules

Activities on Esplanade des Particules

Ongoing activities from 17:00 to 23:00

Virtual Reality Headsets

Visit the CMS particle detector, the LHC tunnel or the huge CERN Data Center thanks to our Virtual Reality headsets. From the space to inside a particle collision, immerse yourself into the heart of CERN experiments for a 360° excursion!

Discovery of TOTEM, ISOLDE, CLOUD and AWAKE experiments

Researchers from four CERN experiments will present their work in an interactive and fun way.

Robotic workshop: program your own robot!

Learn how to program a robot and interact with it. "Poppy Ergo Jr" robot is an articulated arm designed for education. Thanks to its visual programing interface and its ability to learn from example, it can be used by everyone without age restriction and without prior knowledge. Thanks to CERN researchers and to the Poppy robot, you will learn everything about robots, how they are used at CERN and their role in modern science.

Place: IdeaSquare. Registration and information on Esplanade des Particules. Duration of the workshop 40-45 minutes. From 7 years old. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Visits of the Synchrocyclotron

Built in 1957, the Synchrocyclotron (SC) is CERN's first particle accelerator. Now designed to accommodate the public, the SC building allows you to discover CERN and its history thanks to the latest multimedia projection techniques. It is inevitably one of the favourite visit point of the laboratory!

Registration and departure of guided tours on Esplanade des Particules. From 7 years old. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Cloud chamber workshop: build a particle detector!

In this workshop, participants will assemble their own particle detector (a so-called cloud chamber) using dry ice and isopropanol to make cosmic particles and natural radiation visible. Afterwards, they study the properties of the different particle tracks and discuss these observations together with a CERN scientist.

Place: S'cool Lab. Registration and information at the laboratory entrance. Duration of the workshop 45 minutes. From 12 years old. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
