Axions arose in theoretical attempts to understand the observed symmetry of QCD. Remarkably, they have the right properties to provide the "dark matter" that astronomers need. There are promising new ideas to test that hypothesis, especially including the ALPHA plasma haloscope that I will describe. I will also discuss how better understanding and data in QCD can help us refine our ideas...
