Overview

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, will host in Geneva, Switzerland on 30 August-3 September 2010 the “liquid helium” week of the European Graduate Course in Cryogenics, a common teaching project of the Universities of Technology of Dresden, Wroclaw and Trondheim (see the project's general website).

This course is focused on liquid natural gas, hydrogen and helium cryogenics and it will be followed by severely selected students. The CERN week will be dedicated to lectures, tutorials and laboratory work related to helium cryogenics, with the opportunity to visit the largest cryogenic helium systems of the Large Hadron Collider.

In view of the success of the two previous years, it was decided to continue holding the course in 2010, though with a slightly different format. As Wroclaw U of T will host the International Cryogenic Engineering Conference (ICEC) in 2010, they have asked the “liquid helium” week to be exceptionally held at CERN, Geneva (Switzerland). While this is certainly a good choice from the point of view of large cryogenic helium systems, with the 10 large cryoplants cooling the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its experiments, CERN will only act as host laboratory organizing the classes and visits, but the teaching and its validation will remain under the responsibility of Wroclaw U of T as academic institution.

The 2010 venue will take place:

- from 23 to 27 August at TU Dresden,
- from 30 August to 3 September at CERN, host for Wroclaw U of T,
- from 6 to 10 September at NTNU Trondheim.
