This workshop is financed by ExtreMe Matter Institute EMMI of the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research.

The EMMI workshop New Vistas in Photon Physics in Heavy-Ion Collisions will be hosted
by the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences and AGH University of Science and Technology, Kraków, Poland.

Date:

  • student day: Monday September 19, 2022,
  • workshop: Tuesday, September 20 - Thursday, September 22, 2022.

This workshop focuses on aspects of photo-induced processes, as well as on real and virtual photo-emission in heavy-ion collisions at the energies of RHIC and the LHC.

Scientific topics:

• The physics of strong electromagnetic fields
• $\gamma\gamma \rightarrow \gamma\gamma$ scattering in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions
• Photoproduction of pseudoscalar $\pi^{0}, \eta, \eta'$ mesons, and of tensor $f_{2}$(1270) and other mesons
• Photoproduction of continuum pion and kaon pairs
• Multiple photoproduction of $\rho^{0}$ mesons
• Production and measurements of photons in semi-central heavy-ion collisions
• Electromagnetic radiation from the Quark-Gluon Plasma
• Photo-nuclear processes as probes of gluon distribution in nuclei

Main organizers:

  • Iwona Grabowska-Bołd, AGH University of Science and Technology, Kraków
  • Mariola Kłusek-Gawenda, Institute of Nuclear Physics PAN, Kraków
  • Rainer Schicker, Physikalisches Institut Ruprecht-Karls Universität Heidelberg
