How to reach Coimbra

Coimbra is served by two international airports: Lisboa (LIS) and Porto (OPO). Total connection time to Coimbra is roughly the same, either by car or public transportation.

By Train (see timetables here)

From LIS

Arrivals at Lisboa airport may take the metro (8 min ride, 2€), or an UBER/taxi (5 min ride, aroiund 8€) to the train station "Gare do Oriente". From there, take a long-distance train ("Alfa Pendular" or "Intercidades") to "Coimbra-B". Trains (20€-25€, for 2nd class) depart every hour on average and take less than two hours to reach Coimbra-B station.

If you are staying in downtown Coimbra, you can take the connecting train to "Coimbra-A". In any case, you can use an UBER/taxi (5€-7€).

From OPO

Arrivals at Porto may take the metro (37 min ride, 2€) or an UBER/taxi (20 min ride, 15€-30€) to the train station "Campanhã". From there, take a long-distance train ("Alfa Pendular" or "Intercidades") to "Coimbra-B". Trains (14€-18€, for 2nd class) depart approximately every 45 min and take about one hour to reach Coimbra-B station.

If you are staying in downtown Coimbra, you can take the connecting train to "Coimbra-A". In any case, you can use an UBER/taxi (5€-7€).

By Shuttle

There is a door-to-door service, connecting the two airports to Coimbra. The booking is available here (43€ from/to Lisbon and 36€ from/to Porto).

There are also direct buses (Flixbus) from Oporto Airport to Coimbra.

By Car

Not necessary for Coimbra, but if you choose this option, expect about 1h30 ride from Oporto (OPO) and 2h00 from Lisbon (LIS) to central Coimbra.

Getting around Coimbra

Coimbra is a small city and can be easily explored by foot. However, the walk to the University is steep, especially if you climb from downtown Coimbra. In these cases, you can use the municipal buses or the electric scooters scattered around the city.

Portugal is a EU-country and one of the main European tourist destinations. Entry visas are not required for EU-citizens and the most of the remaining European countries. Visa is not required for USA, Canada, etc. For further information click here(PT) or here(EN).
