Excursions

Three different excursion options have been arranged for Wednesday April 9th 2025. The main excursion will include a boat trip along one of the most scenic parts of the Rhine river to Loreley. In addition, two more budget-friendly options are available: a guided tour through Frankfurt's new ‘Old Town’ and a tour to the FAIR construction site at GSI.

During registration you will be able to select your excursion and settle the payment.

1. Boat trip along the Rhine river (600 person max, 50€):

We will leave the conference venue at 13:30 for Rüdesheim am Rhein, a charming town beside the Rhine river. It is known for winemaking, especially of Riesling wines. From there a boat will depart at 15:00 and take us on a 4-hour tour along the Rhine river to the Loreley, a 132-metre-high (433 ft), steep slate rock on the right bank of the River Rhine in the Rhine Gorge (or Middle Rhine) at Sankt Goarshausen, part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many historic and scenic sights and castles along the way. During the trip coffee/tea and cake will be served as well as a small snack before our return to Rüdesheim.

The buses will return to Frankfurt around 20:00.

The total cost for the trip, including the bus transfer, the boat trip as well as the coffee, cake, and snack will be 50,00€.

2. Guided tour through the new ‘Old Town’ of Frankfurt (150 person max, 10€):

There will be a guided tour ‘History and present’ (in English language) of the newly renovated Old Town of Frankfurt near the Römerberg. Meeting point of the tour will be the Paulskirche in the city centre. We will have 6 groups of 25 persons each and the duration of  the tour will be 2 hours, starting at 14:30 in front of the Paulskirche. During the tour you will see the Paulskirche, Dom, New Old Town, Saalgasse, and the Museum Promenade along the Main river.

The cost for the trip will be 10€ per person.

3. Visit of GSI and the FAIR construction site (100 person max, 15 €):

Important change:
The busses will leave the Campus Westend at 13:30. Please be aware that due to safety regulations we will not be allowed to enter the FAIR construction site on foot. We have therefore modified the itinerary below. Mainly the visit to the FAIR construction site will be done via a drive through with the bus as well as from a platform which allows a good view to the construction site. In addition, several interesting sites on the GSI campus will be visited.
If this change in the tour makes it not interesting for you anymore we will allow last minute changes in the excursion, provided there are still slots available in the other tours. If you wish to do a last minute change please approach Jan Steinheimer during registration at the conference.

Original tour:
A guided tour to GSI and the FAIR construction site has been arranged. You will be transferred to GSI by bus and then take a bus tour of the FAIR construction site and see the site from the lookout. On the GSI campus you will be able to visit a select number of experimental sites and be given an introduction to the physics of GSI/FAIR.  Please note that access to GSI and FAIR is restricted and requires prior registration and security check. There are restrictions for some individuals from specific institutes but this may continuously change. In order to register the participants, we will have to collect the name and passport number of everyone at least one week before the excursion and there is a (small, but finite) chance that some are denied entry. If you suspect that you may encounter problems with entry you may want to consider choosing another excursion option.

The cost of the trip will be 15€ per person.
