Hands-on Labs

Hands on Labs: The rules

THE HANDS-ON-LABS ARE AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE INFIERI SCHOOLS TRAINING PROGRAM.

The attendance to the labs parallel sessions are obligatory.

THE DATE FOR LABS REGISTRATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED TOWARDS END OF AUGUST 2025: STAY TUNED.

BUT FOR LAB REGISTRATION TO BE ACCEPTED YOU MUST FIRST REGISTER AT THE SCHOOL.

There is at least one Lab for each main lecture topic

It is organized and set up by confirmed researchers or academics who ensure themselves the training during the whole duration of the school. This implies that they can organized the overall 2 weeks school duration, if needed, in a team work, with 2 or 3 same level experts.

Each Hands-on Lab is run each day of the school i.e. from Tuesday till Friday (included) over the first week and from Monday till Friday (included) over the second week.

In replacement of not having the Lab session on Saturday Sept. 6, There will be 2 lab sessions on Monday Sept. 8 (one in the morning the other one on the afternoon as usual. Thus 10 lab sessions in total.

Each day the same Lab is run but with different teams of school attendants, with 2 or 3 school attendants for the hardware-based Labs and 3 to 5 School attendants for the software based Labs.

Therefore Labs cannot be running only on some specific days of the school duration.

The hands-on Labs are by definition not demonstrator Labs or visits.

They include an introductory lecture of 30 to 40 minutes, on the specific topic developed in this Lab session. This allows complementing important aspects that cannot be covered in the plenary lecture and/or offers to introduce each student deeper in the topic.

The students can repeat a Lab session another day if they feel they need it for a better comprehension of the topic.

Some Labs can be organized in two sessions of 3 hours each if needed. It is to say a "beginner session" and an "advanced session". And students can of course jump to the "advanced session", depending their level on the topic.

The school students have to attend the Labs that do no correspond to their domain of expertise and current activity. But indeed Labs in fields that are new for them and allow them to open the eye on other fields.

Students are strongly encouraged to not perform the Labs with always the same team and/or with their close friends. The aim of the school is to favour diversity, mobility and exchanges

The  presence of the school attendants is registered each day for each lab session in a dedicated Lab-Logbook (digital version only), that each Lab organizer will fill.

Each students performing the Lab, will be evaluated by the Lab organizer. This can be used by the students on their request to get credits for their cursus at their home Institution (as asked by a number of INFIERI school attendants in previous school editions).

Hands-on Labs training Program

Around 25 Hands-on Lab in total are in preparation for this school edition. They are foreseen to cover the following main topics as presented in the plenary lectures:

  • Theoretical Masterclass on  Quantum Mechanics , Plasma Physics, Particle Physics and Astrophysics
  • Advanced microelectronics and Semiconductors Technology Labs
  • Lab on supraconductivity
  • Hardware-based Labs on Prototypes of New Detectors.
  • Lab on sky survey by real-time remonte connection to Telescope. in. Hawai.
  • Lab of data transmission (standard and wireless)
  • Labs on new features of High Performance Computing, HPC.
  • Artificial Intelligence dedicated Labs both software and hardware based.
  • Quantum Science and Technology dedicated Labs
  • High Field supraconductor magnets
  • Lab on New Energies:  Nuclear Fusion Lab.
  • Labs on Medical Applications

The school attendants will have to choose ten Labs among the overall list of Labs. These chosen Labs must not correspond to their present expertise or research. The idea of the school is indeed to open their mind to new fields and also grab the synergy between different domains.

HANDS-ON-LABS BOOKLET:

All the Labs organizers are providing a description of their Lab. This complete information on the HANDS-ON LABS is included in the HANDS-ON LAB BOOKLET that will be posted in a preliminary version by JUNE 1st 2025 and a final version by JULY 31st.

This booklet will serve as a tool for the students during the school but also for preparing them to choose what Labs to attend before the school starts. It will also include some proposed homework in preparation for some rather advanced Labs.
