Description

The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade represents a major milestone for the LHC experiments. It will deliver an instantaneous luminosity of up to $5–7.5\times10^{34},\mathrm{cm^{-2}s^{-1}}$, greatly extending the physics reach through precision measurements of the Standard Model and searches for new phenomena.

To meet the demanding conditions of HL-LHC operation, CMS will install a new silicon Outer Tracker as part of its Phase-II upgrade. The detector will comprise approximately 13,000 modules of two types, PS (pixel-strip) and 2S (strip-strip). The common two-sensor module concept enables on-detector transverse momentum discrimination by correlating hits at the Level-1 trigger. The outer barrel (TB2S) alone will include 3,296 2S modules.

The INFN Genoa CMS group contributes to this effort through the testing and qualification of the service hybrids for the 2S modules, supporting the construction of the Phase-II Outer Tracker foreseen for installation during the HL-LHC long shutdown (LS3).
