Description
The IPPOG-Masterclasses give students the opportunity to become particle physicists for a day by analysing real data from CERN’s LHC experiments. The project started in 2005 and has been using LHC-data since 2011. More than 13,000 high-school students from 46 countries participate each year.
In Brazil, the IPPOG-Masterclasses started in January/2008. High school students work with real data collected by the LHC-experiments exploring the fundamental forces and building blocks of nature and are informed about exciting discoveries in particle physics, connecting university, science education, and modern scientific research with the schools. The program offers authentic and valuable experiences to physics education at school, stimulating the students´ interest in science.
Over the years, the Masterclass has grown, reaching 15 out of the 27 Brazilian states, performed as a separate activity, Physics Journeys, Physics Weeks, Science Fairs, offered as a short course in the Physics Teaching Symposium. Many times it inspires young students to follow STEAM careers.
I am the Brazilian National Masterclasses Coordinator and will present a general view of this activity in Brazil on behalf of all organizers spread around the country, which hard work makes the dissemination of the Masterclasses in this huge territory possible.
