How do learners use AI tutors during experimental problem solving?

This study explores AI use patterns among students engaged in experimental problem-solving with polarization filter black boxes, both individually and in collaborative pairs. Using a prompted AI tutor, 57 chat transcripts were analysed to identify interaction patterns. Learners' inquiries were categorized into seven types, including action planning and physics content questions. Sequential pattern analysis revealed more diverse patterns in collaborative settings, hinting at more systematic AI use compared to individual conditions. Notably, in both settings, action planning questions frequently initiated ongoing questions of different types.
