Description

This study investigates how pre-service physics teachers apply Dirac’s bra-ket notation as a “bookkeeping” method in introductory quantum optics. In this approach the quantum state of system is mapped from schematic diagram to symbolic form, followed by application of the Born rule to calculate detection probabilities. Using the epistemic-games framework, student performance was analyzed through course assignments and an exam. Results show generally high performance when applying methods. Notation style had little effect, suggesting simple instructional steps effectively support learning mathematical foundations.
