Guided tours of the HL-LHC Point 1 surface and underground infrastructures (Meyrin, CH) and the HL-LHC IT String test stand (SM18 hall, FR) are planned during the collaboration meeting week on Tuesday morning, Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning (details below).

Please find the safety details, times, and pick up points below.

You must have registered to attend.

Safety information: please read carefully

Please wear flat, closed-toe shoes for the visits.

Please also note the following safety measures:

  • Visitors must remain with the guide for the whole visit

Tour description

On the tour, visitors will first get an overview of the technical services being installed in the new HL-LHC P1 surface and underground infrastructures. You will descend to the underground galleries, seeing the progress of 36 months of civil engineering work and 23 months of general services installation, including the chance to view the 70 m vertical shaft from below! You’ll also get to tour the surface buildings hosting ventilation, cryogenic, cooling and electrical equipment.

The second part of the tour will take you to CERN’s SM18 test hall to discover the IT String, the full test stand that replicates the left side of the HL-LHC insertion region at Point 5. This essential facility is designed to validate key HL-LHC technologies in a complete circuit setup. You’ll see the efforts of many collaborations for the HL-LHC coming together in a relatively small space: see the 4 quadrupole, corrector package and dipole cryo-assemblies, plus the cold powering system, warm powering system, fully remote alignment system, and the novel HL-LHC quench detection and protection systems - all under one roof and integrated for the first time!
