Description

Currently the the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) is being constructed at DESY, Germany. 800 superconducting cavities and 100 superconducting magnet packages will be operated in a liquid helium II bath at 2K. The superconducting XFEL linac will be supplied by the XFEL helium refrigerator plant, which consists of two modified refrigerators, former used for the operation of the HERA storage ring. Furthermore a new four stage cold compressor system was added to return the 2K-vapour to the XFEL helium refrigerator.
The status of the XFEL cryogenic system, commissioning results, first operation experience and current challenges are presented in the talk.
