Snacks
There are snacks (vending machines) available in the Kelvin Building Common Room, however, due to other events on this week the Common Room is unavailable from 15h Monday until 10h30 Wednesday. In this case, as well as shops on Byres Road, there is a shop in the Queen Margaret Union, just across University Avenue.
Food and Drink
Glasgow has a great tradition of a friendly welcome and many places to eat, drink and be merry (particularly the drink!). The West End of the city is full of good pubs and restaurants, serving both lunch and dinner menus (note, however, that lunch is included in the registration fee Mon-Fri). Some notable local favourites are:
Restaurants:
- Two Fat Ladies (excellent fish)
- No. 16 Byres Road (modern Scottish)
- The Little Curry House (good curries - what else?)
- Mother India and Mother India Cafe (excellent curries; cafe serves small portions tapas style)
- Little Italy (good value counter style Italian)
- Old Salty's (hipster fish and chips, but very tasty)
- The Ubiquitous Chip (expensive, but top notch Scottish fine dining)
- Cafe Andaluz (Spanish Tapas)
- The Bothy (contemporary Scottish; also our dinner venue on Thursday)
- Stravagin (modern Scottish cuisine, also a good bar)
- Finnieston (fish and seafood)
Pubs:
- The Three Judges
- Tennents Bar
- Oran Mor
- Brewdog
- Curlers
- Stravagin
- The Doublet
Weather
"There are two seasons in Scotland, June and winter..." - Billy Connolly
Scotland has a temperate west coast climate and June usually enjoys some fine weather (it has the lowest rain days of any month and the second highest mean sunshine hours). However, cold, wet and windy are always possible, so bring a waterproof jacket for sure!
Around The West End
There are quite a few places of interest in the West End of the city beyond the obvious eating and drinking:
- Botanic Gardens at the top of Byres Road (a favourite destination when the weather is fine; visit the Kibble Palace glasshouse in particular)
- Walk along the River Kelvin down to Kelvin Bridge (walk extends in either direction and reaches Kelvingrove Park going SE)
- University Main Building and Cloisters are impressive (see the self guided walking tour)
- Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum house a fine collection of art and objects
- The Hunterian Museum is run by the university and has many fine exhibits, including some of Lord Kelvin's experiments
- A little further away, across the River Clyde, is the Glasgow Science Centre (but still quite walkable)
