Networking

Wireless

The Kelvin Building has two different wireless networks available:

  • Eduroam - standard eduroam setup and it 'should just work'. This covers most of the areas we will use during the week (including the main lecture theatre). There are some port filters.
  • KELVIN - a 'private' network that allows port filtered access to most main services (http, https, ssh and kerberos all work). This covers some of the rooms used later in the week for the hackathon.

Authentication:

  • Eduroam - usual eduroam credentials.
  • KELVIN - authenticate using the login key 14b74f (you need to sign in once a day).

Port filtering:

  • We know that ports 7999 (CERN gitlab over ssh) and 8443 (CERN gitlab over https with krb5) are blocked on eduroam. Please use the more standard https access on port 443.
  • If you are aware of a need to use any other non-standard port or unusual service then we can test this in advance. We may be able to negotiate opening a port, if it's well justified.

Wired

If you require faster network access than a crowded WiFi connection allows, we'll arrange for some wired access (this also circumvents all port blocking, so it's useful if you need non-standard ports). But please send us your MAC address if you want to use this and we will register it with the DHCP server.

In this case you need to configure your web browser to user the University's web proxy. Follow these instructions.
