Description
Strong experimental and theoretical efforts are devoted to the study of the QCD phase diagram looking for the phase transition from hadronic to partonic matter. Event-by-event fluctuations of different observables are considered as a signal for the first order phase transition and should shed light on the predicted existence and location of the critical endpoint of the first order transition line.
We present experimental NA49 results and model comparisons for <p_t> fluctuations, multiplicity fluctuations as well as the energy and centrality dependence of particle yield ratio fluctuations. Details of the data analysis together with the estimation of the expected effect from a critical point will be discussed. The energy dependence of <p_t> and multiplicity fluctuations shows no conclusive indication of the critical point. In addition, we will argue that the new results on the centrality dependence of event-by-event p/pi fluctuations strongly hint to resonances as their origin.
