A series of workshops related to the use of Nb3Sn Rutherford cable in accelerator magnets is being launched by CEA and CERN.

The goals of this series are:

  • To share experience gained worldwide on:
    • Conductor dimensional changes during heat treatment
    • Mechanical characterization of impregnated cable
    • Effect of mechanical stress and strain on conductor performances
  • To set-up a best practice manual for the above topics
  • To state on relevant design criteria for accelerator magnets
  • To list the remaining problematics on above topics and define a development path to solve them.

This 1st workshop, organized jointly by CEA and CERN at CIEMAT, Madrid from 16 to 17 November 2017, will focus on:

  • Conductor dimensional changes during heat treatment
    • Results state of the art
    • Role of the insulation on the dimensional change of the cable
    • Measurement setup and procedures
  • Impregnated conductor mechanical characterization
    • Results state of the art
    • Measurement setup and procedure
    • Sample preparation procedure.

The Workshop will begin after the closing session of the 7th HL-LHC Collaboration Meeting (jointly organized by CIEMAT and CERN the same week) and is open to scientists and engineers involved in the development of Nb3Sn accelerator magnets worldwide.

More information is available in the Letter of Intent and attached poster.

If you would like to propose a contribution to this Workshop, please contact maria.durante@cea.fr

The deadline for registration is Tuesday, 7 November 2017.
