Description

A dedicated program is organized to train teachers for better and improved physics teachings. International experts design the program in collaboration with the local organizing committee (LOC) of the host country. The LOC is responsible to identify the teachers that participate in this program. Up to 70 teachers are accepted for an intensive program of one-week. The teachers program runs in parallel to the student program and designed such that the teachers participate in the ASP Forum and in parts of the ASP Conference.

First Look at LHC Data - Z-boson mass activity 1h

Teachers are given paper event displays with x- and y-axes of Z boson candidate dimuon events that are almost completely transverse to the beamline. They use protractors, vector analysis, momentum conservation, energy conservation, and the mass-energy-momentum relationship to calculate the Z mass.

        Introduction to Masterclass Measurement 1h

Teachers are given a description of how the detector works and what to expect for results. Teachers examine the detector animation and make their own "cheat sheets" that show the types of events for which they will search. Finally, they will look at real events together.

Speakers: Albert De Roeck (CERN), Dave Charlton (University of Birmingham (GB)), David Bertsche (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DE)), Kate Shaw (INFN Gruppo Collegato di Udine and ICTP Trieste), Kenneth Cecire (University of Notre Dame)

        Masterclass Measurement 1h 30m

Teachers will work in pairs. Each pair of teachers will be at a computer and be assigned a dataset of 100 CMS events to analyze visually to determine if each event is a candidate Z, W+, W-, or other particle. In the case of events that look like a Z signature (dilepton events), teachers will create a mass histogram in CIMA. Teachers will also count W+ vs W- events and electron vs muon final states to determine these ratios.

Speakers: Albert De Roeck (CERN), Dave Charlton (University of Birmingham (GB)), David Bertsche (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DE)), Kate Shaw (INFN Gruppo Collegato di Udine and ICTP Trieste), Kenneth Cecire (University of Notre Dame)

Teachers will look at masterclass results for the whole group and discuss with physicists. Teachers will also have an introduction to the World Wide Data Day (W2D2) measurement that high school learners will have in their workshops.

Speakers: Dave Charlton (University of Birmingham (GB)), David Bertsche (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DE)), Kate Shaw (INFN Gruppo Collegato di Udine and ICTP Trieste), Kenneth Cecire (University of Notre Dame)
