The 43rd CERN School of Computing (CSC 2020), organized by CERN in collaboration with AGH University of Science and Technology (AGH), together with Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN), will be held in the beautiful city of Kraków - Poland, from 23 August to 5 September, 2020.
Students should aim to arrive in Kraków by early evening of Sunday August 23rd, and leave on Saturday September 5th. The tuition (lectures, exercises, and other part of the official programme) will take place from August 24th until September 4th.
We will be accommodated at Novotel Kraków City West, a modern and nice 4-star hotel, with spacious and confortable rooms. The hotel is located in a few walk distance from Kraków center, old Town and to the bars & nightlife area.
Most of the lectures and exercises will take place at AGH Centrum Informatyki, a modern and well equipped building.
We are committed to achieving an inclusive and stimulating environment at our Schools, and we encourage all qualified persons to apply. Applicants will be considered regardless of nationality, gender, age, ethnic origin, or individual differences of belief, sexual orientation or disability.
The CSC 2020 school is aimed at postgraduate (ie. minimum of Bachelor degree or equivalent) engineers or scientists, working at CERN or at other research institutes, with experience in particle physics, in computing or in related fields. We welcome applications from all nationalities.
Attendance is limited to 60 students.
Attendance at the school is for the entire programme; it is not possible to register or follow one track only.
The deadline for application is Sunday 5 April 2020. All applications will then be subject to a selection process, according to the number of places available. Applicants will be informed by 4 May if they are successful.
Candidates should ensure that they have, by Sunday 5 April 2020:
- completed the Registration Form online,
- uploaded a signed formal letter of reference (on formal headed paper from the applicant's institute/organization) from their professor or supervisor.
The formal letter of reference must be received by the School (whether uploaded or emailed) by Sunday 5 April 2020 at the latest.
This reference letter is a crucial part of your application for the School. It is your responsibility to ensure we receive it in due time.
If your professor or supervisor does not wish to provide you with a letter directly, s/he can email us your letter of reference instead. This should be sent directly to Computing.School@cern.ch, with the subject: Reference Letter CSC 2020: [name of applicant]
The selection of the participants will be made by the School Advisory Committee. Applicants will be informed of the outcome by Monday 4 May.
Accepted applicants will receive an Invitation Letter from the School.
Payment of the School fee will confirm your place, at which point you will be considered a participant.
Students who have successfully passed the (optional) final examination and followed the entire programme will receive a diploma from CSC as well as 6 ECTS credits from AGH and IFJ. It will be presented at the closing session.
Students who followed the entire programme but did not successfully pass (or did not take) the final exam will receive a certificate of attendance.
The working language of the School (including for all exercises) will be English. As a participant, you must therefore have attained a sufficient level of English prior to the School commencing in order to follow effectively the tuition and be in a position to fully contribute.
If, for any reason, you are unable to take up your place at the School, you must inform the School Administration immediately by email (Computing.School@cern.ch).
If you have already paid your participation fee, the School will give you a full fee refund so long as a suitable replacement participant can be found (NB: responsibility for identifying and inviting a potential replacement participant rests with the CERN, as the organiser of the School, and not with the individual participant or his/her institute).
