Description

In this appendix we will briefly address the issue of cost, giving two examples where the performance of the superconducting technology is weighted versus its cost.

We will then apply the material presented in the course to deal with two case studies. The first one is the analysis of the conceptual design of an accelerator shown in a science fiction movie (Terminator III) showing a 5.76 TeV accelerator of a circular length of 200 m. We will discuss the needs in terms of main dipoles, and the implications on the required superconductor, the mechanical aspects, and the protection.

The second one is the use of the analytical approach for a sensitivity analysis: we will start from the LHC dipole design and we will show how in the design of Fresca dipole the short sample field was increased to cross the threshold of the 10 T barrier.
