Description
The photoproduction of $J/\psi$ mesons in ultra-peripheral collisions of heavy ions is a well-known process to study nuclear dynamics at hadron colliders. In particular, the dependence of incoherent $J/\psi$ photoproduction on the Mandelstam variable $|t|$ enables to assess the significance of fluctuations of the spatial distribution, in the impact parameter plane, of the gluon fields within nuclei.
In this talk, we will present the first measurement of the photonuclear cross section for the incoherent production of $J/\psi$ mesons as a function of $|t|$. The measurement, by the ALICE Collaboration, was performed at midrapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. We will also compare the data to predictions of various phenomenological models with and without the inclusion of such fluctuations.
