Suggested Hotels:
Three hotels are close to downtown New Brunswick, and are convenient to public transportation and the Rutgers bus system.
Other hotels are available in the central New Jersey area, but will require a car to get to and from the conference venue. Participants are advised to please book their own accommodations ASAP to ensure the best prices and availability.
Conference Location
Rutgers-New Brunswick is multiple campuses in and around the city of New Brunswick. Two of the suggested hotels (Heldrich and Hyatt) are located nearby to the downtown train station and the College Avenue Campus, within easy walking distance. This area contains many of the most accessible restaurant options as well. The University Inn is located on the Cook/Douglas campus, which is not as walkable from the train station, though a free bus is a relatively short walk away from the station.
The conference is held on the Livingston campus, across the Raritan river from the train station and the suggested hotels. Free transportation from the College Avenue and Cook/Douglas campuses is available using the Rutgers Bus system (direct link to bus map), which is primarily used by the Rutgers students to get between campuses for their classes. This system is completely free, with no ID required to get on a bus.
A mobile app with bus tracking and routes is available.
The LX route runs between the College Ave campus and the Livingston campus, REXL runs between Cook/Douglas and Livingston, and EE runs between College Ave and Cook/Douglas. At peak times for college classes there can occasionally be a wait as buses can be full, but buses run every 5-10 minutes during these times. Usually it takes 20 minutes to get between the College Ave and Livingston campuses on the Rutgers buses.
An Uber/Lyft or taxi from downtown New Brunswick to the Livingston campus conference venue typically costs ~$10.
Parking
Parking is available at no cost for all visitors but they must register their vehicle in advance at this link.
Visitors should park in the Green and Yellow lots on Livingston campus.
Faculty, Staff, and Students must park only in lots they are authorized to park in and should not register under the special event parking link.
Air Travel and Ground Transportation
There are three international airports in the New York City area (Newark Liberty -- EWR, LaGuardia -- LGA, and John F Kennedy -- JFK). We recommend you fly to EWR as it is the easiest to get to via public transportation from Rutgers.
To/From EWR:
From EWR, you can reach the Rutgers, New Brunswick campus easily by public transportation, using the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor line.
NJ Transit takes both physical tickets (which can be purchased on your way out of the airport, at New York Penn Station, or in the New Brunswick Train Station). You can also download and use the NJ Transit app to buy tickets and see train schedules. Please note that tickets on the app should be purchased and activated before boarding the train. A 1-way ticket from New Brunswick to/from EWR is $17.75. Trains run to and from the airport multiple times per hour from 6 am until 9 pm, and once per hour up to midnight. Note that Amtrak trains also stop at EWR.
From any EWR terminal, take the AirTrain monorail to the NJ Transit station. Take a south-bound (towards Trenton) train to the New Brunswick stop. Returning from New Brunswick, take the Northeast line north (towards NY-Penn Station) to the Newark EWR stop. The trip takes 30-40 minutes in either direction, and plan on another 15 minutes from the train station to a terminal using the monorail.
If you are renting a car at EWR, you will want to take I-95/NJ Turnpike south to the New Brunswick exit (Route 18). This is a toll road, many rental companies will provide you an EZ-Pass if requested.
Taxis and Uber/Lyft to and from EWR are also available, typical cost is $80-100 one-way (prices vary)
From JFK or LGA:
Note that these airports are on the other side of New York City from New Jersey, and require significantly more time to get to and from Rutgers, compared to EWR. For both airports, the most direct route by public transportation is to take local trains and/or subways to New York Penn Station, and then switch to a NJ Transit Northeast Corridor train to New Brunswick (see links above in the EWR section). Please note if you plan to take a car, bus, or shuttle from JFK or LGA that traffic into and out of New York can be extremely slow; please plan plenty of extra time. Flyaway shuttles to and from Penn stations are available at both airports, but note traffic conditions.
Trains from Penn Station leave regularly until midnight (running hourly after 9 pm). A one-way ticket is $13, and round-trip tickets costs $26. Express trains from New Brunswick take about 40-45 minutes to Penn, local trains take 55-60 minutes.
To/from Penn Station towards JFK, you can take an Airtrain to Jamaica station, followed by a Long Island Railroad (LIRR) train from Jamaica to Penn Station (30 minutes, excluding transfer times). Or take an airport tram to Howard station, followed the A line to Penn Station (estimated time is at least 1 hour).
To/from LGA, you can take an MTA bus to the Woodside station, followed by a LIRR train to Penn Station.
Other airports:
It is also possible to get to New Brunswick, NJ using public transportation from airports further away than the NJ/NYC area, though these options will take longer and require more transfers between rail systems. From Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), the SEPTA subway/light rail system from the airport connects to both the Northeast corridor Amtrak line (see below) and the NJ Transit Northeast line via a transfer at Trenton.
Baltimore's Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) also connects to the Amtrak Northeast corridor line, which can be taken north to New Brunswick or to a transfer point on the NJ Transit Northeast line (see below).
Amtrak:
New Brunswick is on the Northeast Regional Amtrak line, running on the East coast from DC up to Boston. If you are taking Amtrak, you may find more and cheaper options if you travel to the Metropark Amtrak stop and then transfer to a NJ Transit Northeast Corridor train heading south to New Brunswick.
Visiting New York City:
Trains to and from New York Penn Station in downtown Manhattan run regularly until midnight (hourly after 9 pm). A round-trip tickets costs $26, express trains take about 40-45 minutes to NYC, local trains take 55-60 minutes. See NJ Transit links above.
