Reaching CERN

Travel information

CERN shall pay the transport expenses for a return journey between the place of residence or of employment of the traveller and CERN, or any other place where the person is invited by CERN.

The following classes of travel are allowed:

  1. a)  Air plane: economy or equivalent (including one piece of luggage); tariffs like “Economy Premium” are not considered as being equivalent;
  2. b)  Train: first-class, sleeper or couchette;
  3. c)  Rental car: compact or economy category

Rental car or taxi is paid or reimbursed only if necessary and duly justified (e.g. bulky equipment to be transported, unsuitable public transport,...). Rental car in Geneva area is not reimbursed.

Transport costs between the airport / train station and CERN, or any other final destination, are reimbursed at actual cost provided each individual item claimed exceeds 20 CHF.

Where the traveller uses his own means of transport (e.g. private car) or a travel class different than these mentioned above, CERN will reimburse the value of the cheapest ticket available on allowed modes of transport.

Access to CERN

You will find all practical information to access the CERN site by plane, car and public transports on https://visit.cern/preparing-your-visit.

Parking

If you provide your car's license plate number on the registration form, you will be allowed to driveonto the CERN site with your car. You can also park your car freely in the public car park behind the Globe.

Transport in the local area

  • Public transport (tram, bus) from the Geneva area stop in front of reception. The stop is Meyrin, CERN.
  • Taxis must be ordered from the hotel reception - this allows cars to enter the site. On the way back to the hotel, always make sure to have your badge on you and have the driver tell the guard you are going to the hotel.
  • Uber operates in the local area but the pick-up and drop-off must be completed outside the site gates (for example at the public transport stops).
