Challenge 4: Occupational safety of health care professionals from radiation exposure, prompted by Atta Bhatti and supported by CERN.
Dr. Hamza Boukabache, CERN
Hamza joined CERN in 2015 as a Project Leader, where he is responsible for the development of the next generation of mixed-field ionizing radiation monitoring systems (CROME) for safety and environmental purposes. He holds a PhD in micro- and nano-systems from the National Institute of Applied Sciences, Toulouse, and has received multiple awards, including the Engineering Sciences Prize from the Toulouse Academy of Science in 2014.
Dr. Atta Ul Aleem Bhatti, Neuro Health Care 4 LMICs
Atta is the only neurosurgeon in Pakistan specializing in both neurospinal and endovascular fields. He trained in neurosurgery at Agha Khan University, Karachi, and established the first private neurosurgery unit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. With extensive training in Europe, Atta’s clinical expertise spans spinal diseases, trauma, AVMs, and stroke therapy. Now based in Geneva, he founded "Neuro Health Care for LMICs" to enhance neurological expertise and care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). His mission is to empower healthcare professionals and improve neurological care globally.
Prof. Manjit Dosanjh, University of Oxford/ICEC
Manjit is former senior advisor for medical applications at CERN and a visiting professor at Oxford, with over 30 years of experience in biology and medical physics. She leads the STELLA project for ICEC, focusing on extending lives with advanced technologies. At CERN since 2000, she has applied particle physics technologies to life sciences and cancer treatment, advocating for technology access in Low Middle-Income Countries. She also serves on the board of ICEC, addressing global cancer disparities.
Dr. Chadia Rizk, IAEA
Chadia holds a Ph.D. in Radiation Protection and Medical Physics. Currently, she serves as a Radiation Protection Specialist at the International Atomic Energy Agency since 2023. Previously, she was the Vice Chairperson of the Steering Committee of the Asia and the Pacific Regional ALARA Network (ARAN) from 2021 to 2023 and worked with the Regulatory Authority at the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission from 2005 to 2023.
Dr. Jerome Damet, CHUV
Jerome is the Radiation Protection Group Leader at the Lausanne University Hospital.
Mr. Tristan Genetay, CHUV/CERN
Tristan is a PhD student at CERN, Lausanne University Hospital, and the University of Lausanne. His research focuses on characterizing scattered radiation fields in hospital theatres using the Timepix4 detector, developed by the Medipix team at CERN. Tristan holds an MSc in medical physics from the University of Nantes and previously completed a master's thesis at the University Hospital of Geneva, where he worked on optimizing radiation doses received by both patients and medical staff in hospital theatres.
Dr. Marta Sans Merce, HUG
Marta currently works at the Service de radiologie, Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève. She does research in Medical Physics.
Dr. Ellen Rosskam, Geneva Graduate Institute
Ellen joined the Global Health Centre in 2022 as Coordinator of the International Geneva Global Health Platform, facilitating collaboration among global health stakeholders. More recently she led research on access to essential medicines for maternal health in sub-Saharan Africa and managed WHO's mercury and health portfolio. Ellen serves as a senior strategist, advisor, and board member for various global health organizations and journals. She holds a PhD from the University of Lausanne, an MPH from UCLA, and a BA from UC Berkeley.
