About the JRC

The JRC: science for policy

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the in-house scientific service of the European Commission. It aims to provide independent, evidence-based knowledge and science, supporting EU policies to positively impact society.

There are JRC sites in Ispra (Italy), Karlsruhe (Germany), Geel (Belgium), Petten (Netherlands) and Sevilla (Spain), with the headquarters in Brussels (Belgium).

Unit G.II.6 (Nuclear data and Measurement Standards) is part of Directorate G (Nuclear Safety and Security) and is based in Geel. It manages a variety of nuclear infrastructure, including the GELINA and MONNET accelerator facilities, as well as laboratories on radionuclide metrology, target preparation and ultra-low level gamma-ray spectrometry.

JRC Open Access

The JRC opens its scientific laboratories and facilities to people working in academia and research organisations, industry, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and more in general to the public and private sector.

Four nuclear laboratories located in Geel, which allow studies of neutron-induced reactions, irradiations in well-characterised neutron and gamma fields, and accurate measurements of radioactivity for science and technology applications, are part of the open access programme:

  • A high-resolution neutron time-of-flight facility (GELINA)
  • An underground laboratory for ultra-low level gamma-ray spectrometry (HADES)
  • A tandem-accelerator-based fast-neutron source (MONNET)
  • Radionuclide metrology laboratories (RADMET)

These laboratories offer unique measurement and training opportunities to both young and experienced nuclear scientists and engineers, as well as to SMEs.
